wellbeing through change
wellbeing in the workplace
Work related stress is on the increase, resulting in high costs for business and society. Most businesses today struggle to address challenges related to employee wellbeing such as absenteeism, staff turnover, productivity and staff satisfaction. According to the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working conditions, work intensity has increased in most European countries over the last decades. A rising number of employees work on tight deadlines and at speed.
According to the Health and Safety Executive in the UK, 1.3 million people who worked during 2010 were suffering from an illness they believe was caused or made worse by their current or past work. This led to 28.5 million days lost overall (1.2 days per worker). Work related health issues contribute substantially to health costs overall, currently estimated at around £100 billion a year in the UK.
A growing number of employers have started to recognise employee health and wellbeing as a strategic priority and have developed and implemented strategies including health campaigns and checks, employee counselling programmes, improvements in workplace practices and flexible working policies. Most of these programmes cover incentives to improve both physical and mental health, based on the understanding that both are inextricably linked.
As employee wellbeing is a relatively new field, companies still struggle to determine the root causes of employee ill-health, set priorities based on risk assessments, establish a clear business case and evaluate the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of various health and wellness initiatives. Agreeing on metrics to measure progress also still presents a challenge.
